Program Details + Structure
Our Adult Learn-to-Sew program is built to take you from absolute beginner to confident maker, with expert guidance, hands-on practice, and projects that build your skills step-by-step.
Our Adult Learn-to-Sew program is a flexible, step-by-step sewing course designed to take beginners from “never touched a sewing machine” to confident, independent makers. Unlike our old Intro to Machine Sewing class—which crammed everything into one 3-hour session—this program spreads learning over 6 sessions, giving you time to practice, retain skills, and build confidence.
You’ll start with a prerequisite class to learn machine basics, then move into Block 1, where you’ll complete two projects: a quilted pillow and a pair of PJ pants or shorts.
The best part? If you love Block 1, you can keep going! Continue into Blocks 2, 3, and 4 (and beyond) to expand your skills, take on more complex projects, and keep sewing as part of a supportive, creative community.
This program is for any adult who wants to learn sewing the right way—with expert guidance, plenty of practice, and a flexible schedule.
It’s perfect for:
- Absolute beginners who have never touched a sewing machine before.
- People who have tried sewing on their own but want to build a solid foundation.
- Anyone looking for a creative outlet, a useful life skill, or a welcoming community to learn in.
Whether your goal is to make clothes, accessories, or just feel comfortable using a sewing machine, this program will give you the skills and confidence to get there.
If you’ve taken Intro to Machine Sewing at Main Fabric, you may be eligible for a greater discount or to have the prerequisite waived entirely—please email us at info@mainfabric.com to confirm.
If you’ve taken an intro sewing class elsewhere, we still require you to take our prerequisite course. This ensures everyone in Block 1 is starting from the same place and that our instructors know every student has had a proper orientation on our sewing machines and in our studio.
The prerequisite is also a great way to reinforce skills you’ve already learned—and if you’re signing up for our Adult Learn-to-Sew program, you’ll get $25 off the cost of the prerequisite class.
Yes, you can. If you’d like to “test-drive” sewing before committing to the full Learn-to-Sew program, start with our Intro Class (the prerequisite). It’s a relaxed, hands-on way to get familiar with the machine, try out a few beginner techniques, and see if this is a hobby you can fall in love with.
If you already know you’re ready to learn it all, we recommend signing up for Adult Learn-to-Sew Block 1 and taking the Intro Class before your first session. Together, they give you the foundation, guided practice, and repetition you need to sew with confidence—whether you’re making clothes, mending a favorite piece, or tackling creative projects for years to come. If you sign up for both today, you will receive a $25 discount on the Intro Class (prerequisite) (discount applied in cart).
Our Adult Learn-to-Sew program is divided into four “blocks”, each made up of 6 instructor-led sessions. Every block focuses on a mix of skills and projects designed to build on what you learned in the previous block.
- Block 1 is all about building confidence with the machine and learning the basics through two beginner-friendly projects.
- Block 2. 3. and 4 gradually introduce more advanced skills, techniques, and project complexity so you keep learning without feeling overwhelmed.
You can take just Block 1, or continue through all four blocks to steadily grow your skills, make a variety of garments and accessories, and leave with the confidence to tackle sewing projects on your own. As the program grows, we’ll be adding more blocks so you can continue beyond Block 4 and keep expanding your skills.
Yes! If you’d like to repeat Blocks to reinforce your skills or try different fabrics and variations, you’re welcome to. Many students enjoy making multiple versions of the projects for extra confidence.
Not at all—you can continue right away or take a break and come back when it suits you. Your skills from Block 1 will carry over, and we’ll help you refresh if needed when you return.

Scheduling + Flexibility
We know life is busy—that’s why our Adult Learn-to-Sew program is designed to work around your schedule, while still giving you the structure and support you need to succeed.

Materials + Equipment
Everything you need to get started—plus a few extras to make sewing at home and in the studio a bit easier.
Just yourself! We provide sewing machines, tools, and everything you need to complete your in-class projects.
During your first class, you’ll learn more about which materials are included in your program and which are not. We typically include all materials for the first project in your block (in Block 1, that’s the quilted pillow) so you can get started right away.

For our prerequisite class and the Adult Learn-to-Sew program, we require everyone to work on our in-studio sewing machines. This ensures all students are starting with the same equipment and allows our instructors to give you consistent, focused guidance.
As your confidence grows in the studio, you’ll find it easy to transfer your skills to your own machine at home—provided it’s in good working order.
If you’d like to learn on your own machine, you have two options:
- Beginner Sewing Drop-In program, where you can bring your own machine to work on in the studio.
- 1-on-1 lesson for $65, where we’ll work directly with you and your machine. To arrange this, email us at info@mainfabric.com.
Yes! All the tools and materials you’ll use in class are available for purchase at Main Fabric. This includes our Beginner Toolkit, a curated set of our tried-and-true favorite sewing tools—perfect for setting up your home sewing space.
